BMW Powertrain Naming System

The engine index consists of two parts: a capital letter of three characters and its suffix

The first letter is the ICE generation: M - first, N - second, B - third, S - sports version

The second digit is the internal combustion engine type: 4 - inline four, 5 - inline six, 6 - this is V8, 7 - this is V12

The third digit indicates the position of the motor within the generation: the larger, the newer

The suffix may consist of a different number of characters, but there are usually at least three of them

The first symbol shows the type of fuel consumed: B - gasoline, D - diesel, G - gas

The next two digits are the displacement in liters multiplied by ten

Other symbols indicate power class, for example, TU is an updated version.
