Bill Davis and Ed Crafton founded Wellcraft Marine Corporation in 1955 in Sarasota, Florida. At first, the company built wooden boats 14-17 feet long, as well as smaller 12-foot Scythians. In the early 1960s, Wellcraft began manufacturing molded fiberglass cases, which was a true innovation at the time. These were small, including cabin boats up to 23 feet long with a deep-V hull. Almost immediately, when the company launched production, it began to export boats to foreign markets, where consumers quickly appreciated the quality, good appearance and practicality of Wellcraft boats. In the 70s, the shipyard produced more than 20 different models, including boats with a trimaran type hull, which showed a very smooth ride.

However, Wellcraft Scarab, first released in 1975, became one of the shipyard's most famous boats.

Its production was mastered in collaboration with Wellcraft brand creator Scarab Larry Smith. Thanks to the Scarab 38 KV, featured in the popular Miami Police: Morale series in 1984, sales grew 21% over the year.

For its 40th anniversary, Wellcraft has produced more than 250 thousand boats. After several ownership changes, Wellcraft, like Scarab, in 2014 came under the control of the French group Beneteau.

Wellcraft is headquartered and manufactured in Cadillac, Michigan. The brand has an extensive dealer network in the world.
